From the article: “'This is not a new tax,' Parker, a former president of the Workers' Compensation Board, said in a news release. 'It is revenue that TransLink has already factored into its long-term budgeting.'”

Talk about doublespeak. If you shift from a parking stall tax to a property tax, it's still a tax increase. If hypothetically, the TransLink board were allowed to replace the parking stall tax with an increase in the fuel tax, would he be saying it's not a new tax?

Ah… yes, but I have moved eight times in only five years. Those are not good odds, and I am starved for all the many feelings of home. The home of a house, the home of community, the home within the self, and the home of partnership. The home of a house is in creation now. The home of community I haven't known since leaving Newburyport. The home within is developing with each day. And the home of partnership… well, I've my sights set on Pete, but we are still in the very beginning of getting to know one another.

    mjs,

Payroll taxes are actually regressive. The Social Security of the payroll tax applies a 6.2% tax rate to the first $94,200 of wage income. If you make $94,200 or less, your effective tax rate is 6.2%, but if you make $942,000, your effective tax rate is 0.62%! The Medicare portion of the payroll tax is a flat tax that is 1.45% on all wage income. As the Social Security portion is much larger, the payroll tax is regressive.

The federal income tax is progressive, although not as much as it used to be.

Micki, thanks for the post about the Health Care Advantage Policies. The government only pays 14% more for Advantage policies instead of the 15% I had heard about. I've got to find my Consumer's Report issue comparing Advantage policies vs. Supplemental policies! I'm going to call my insurance broker and find out if my premiums are going to increase next year.

Well, BH, the buyer's agent was the “most” mad or at least the most hyper. At that point, we needed calmness to work on the problem at hand so we could close and unload the buyer's moving van which was on the way. Fortunately, the buyer's agent had to leave and the buyer and I worked on a quick plan to “make it happen”.

The neighbors, with the daughter, eventually had their home go to foreclosure a few months later so they weren't there too long afterward. Don't know if that was tied to their legal fees or not.

What jumps out at me, in Dubow's e-mail message: “it also frees up our local units to concentrate on what is important: generating local news and information and selling advertising.”Seems to me that customer service, especially for circulation, is important, too. When did it become less important? And what's to prevent “generating local news and information and selling advertising” from being deemed less important, too?

I was so anxious to see a photo of her cheek and swollen eyes…she has such pretty lips. Hope it starts to go down tomorrow–calalmine lotion? Like what you would put on chicken pox or a bee sting?

Loved your “count your many blessings” story. Things do always seem to turn out. And you are on the right track:

    So, amid the conflict
    Whether great or small
    Do not be discouraged
    God is over all
    Count your many blessings
    Angels will attend
    Help and comfort give you
    To your journey's end

    Count your blessings
    Name them one by one
    Count your blessings
    See what God has done
    Count your blessings
    Name them one by one
    Count your many blessings
    See what God has done

    >No flesh shall enter Heaven, But those who are related to our Lord and Savior in spirit shall be granted entrance. People of this world knows only this world and the ways of it. When Paul speaks of the flesh, he speaks of the part of us that leads us into sin. The physical world isn’t bad, in fact that is what the ancient heresy of Gnosticism taught. This is quite clear by the fact that Jesus Himself was physically resurrected, and the fact that *we* will be physically resurrected. I agree that we do need to have a renewed spirit (being born again, if you will), but that isn’t to imply that the physical world is somehow evil. In fact, I’m sure we can both think of spiritual things that are bad.

    Paul:
Per the nature of the exponential function, wealth tends to grow exponentially. Some countries, and chief of all the USA, but not only the USA, have extracted national advantage from letting their plutocracies run wild. They brought back a lot of prey. But now they are out of national control, and presents no national advantage anymore. Time to crack down.
